Salsa and Latin dance in Vaasa

  • Vaasa

Ikkuna News: Dance has always been part of the human life and an important expression of culture through centuries. The oldest evidence of dance includes paintings from ancient India and Egypt dating back to about nine thousand years ago.

The movements in the dance have an artistic and symbolic value. Dance can be characterized by its choreography, style, period or the place of its origin.

Salsa is a form of social dance from Latin America with influences from different countries and culture. Salsa gained popularity in New York in the 1970’s and has gone through a lot of variation through the years.

Social dancing. Salsa Vaasa is a new company founded by Bassel Dalloul and the aim is to keep the interested crowd together by organizing courses and events. There are ongoing latin dance classes and regular salsa parties.

– I have always admired the idea of social dancing. You also get to meet very nice and interesting people who want to have a good time. It is a great exercise in every aspect, such as physical health and mental balance, says Dalloul.

The first courses were hosted by Mustasaaren aikuisopisto. More courses are now available at Tangocho Wasa and Vasa Arbis.

– The best way to get more information is to go to salsavaasa.com, where there is detailed information about different courses and schedules. There is also information regarding upcoming events that we arrange.

Dance Science. There are many studies and scientific research about the benefits of dancing. In addition to the obvious fitness outcome, studies show that the brain-muscle coordination through dance stimulates the brain at a high level, reducing chances of memory related diseases.

The added advantage of it coming with a joyful genre of music is a pleasure indeed.

– I have changed my place of residence quite a few times, and having this interest for dancing has always served me in terms of networking and fitting in. So when I moved in to Vaasa I got myself into the dance scene as well.

– I started teaching at Mustasaaren aikuisopisto in 2011. It all started with one salsa course, and now we have 7 different courses in 3 places, plus a regular monthly party, and hopefully more to come.

Dalloul thinks that the dance scene in Vaasa is getting better and the crowd is slowly increasing. They work on attracting more people and bring in more energy into the community.

– There are other dance schools and initiatives in town. They do have courses and arrange a variety of events and workshops with local and guest teachers.

– I like to think that all these initiatives, each on his own and often together, work to add something to the dance scene in Vaasa, says Dalloul.
