Artisans’ Day at Stundars open air museum

  • Vaasa

Ikkuna News: Artisan is a worker in a skilled trade, especially one that involves making things by hand.

Artisans’ Day at the open air museum in Stundars is held on August 2nd. Stundars is located in the village of Sulva about 15 kilometers from Vaasa.

– The event is filled with skilled artisans showing traditional handicraft techniques. Around 40 artisans will be taking part this time, says Eva-Marie Backnäs from Stundars.

They will demonstrate things like basket weaving, wood working, knitting, spinning wool and flax, making rope, and forging iron.

– We also serve traditional Ostrobothnian soup as well as coffee and pastries.

Twentieth century lifestyle. The event is organized by Stundars open air museum together with artisans from the Crafters Guild Björken.

– Stundars open air museum presents life as it may have been at the turn of the 20th century in the countryside in Swedish-speaking Ostrobothnia.

There are over 60 buildings in the museum which include a country shop, a village school and a farmhouse as well as many artisans’ workshops and crofters’ cottages.

The museum is run by an association, Stundars r.f., and has a staff of 7. There are also many volunteers that assist during different events at the museum.

The museum is open 12–4 pm.

Long History. The Artisans’ Days have been arranged for over 40 years at Stundars. The main idea when the museum village of Stundars was built, was to make it into a ”living” museum, where the workshops were in use and old crafts and skills were demonstrated.

This is one of the main purposes of their work at Stundars to this day.

– We arrange a lot of different events throughout the year. We have artisans’ days for school children, crafts camps and courses, art exhibitions and music events. We also arrange two very popular markets: the Autumn market (this year held Sunday, September 13th) and the Christmas market (Sunday, November 29th).

Open every day. In the summer Stundars is open every day and visitors can walk around the museum and run into ”villagers”, who live in the year 1903. Visitors can participate in their chores like washing laundry, baking or haymaking or just have a chat with them.

The Artisans’ Days have been a part of the program at Stundars since the 1970’s and have always attracted a large number of people who want to learn about different types of crafts and skills.
