IKKUNA NEWS: With the subzero temperatures and the darkness accompanied with it, we know it is the time of the year where winter has either started or about to start. When it is not so much fun to be outside anymore, there are things to do and enjoy by being inside a warm building.
Museums and art galleries are some of the places people can visit during the free time for some leisure activity and learn a lot of new things at the same time.
The Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art which was opened to the public in February 2007 celebrates its 10th anniversary next year with the exhibition ”Art Battle”. The museum is situated in a former customs warehouse in the Inner Harbour of Vaasa.
Art Battle. The concept and the idea of the Art Battle were introduced by Kira Sjöberg to the museum director and board, who then decided to go through with it.
– Kuntsi museum of modern art invited by an open call, all interested in making an exhibition to submit an application to Art Battle. Four groups were selected among good applications, and they will show their skills in visual arts by choosing the works for the anniversary exhibition.
– The exhibition presents the Kuntsi art collection, which is an outstanding collection of Finnish and international contemporary art. The collection contains works from as far as the beginning of the 20th century to the 21st century, but the focus is on art from the 1960s and 70s.
Concept development. The concept is a new way to try and see the results in a field that has been very traditional and not open to new dynamics.
– The idea came to my mind when I was watching a movie about street dancing and the dance off they have in a fun and entertaining way, but at the same time bring out the best in each group, says Sjöberg who works independently on her projects.
– The thought of having a similar concept for art collections seemed interesting and the Kuntsi museum board and staff were brave enough to give a go ahead with the idea. I thank them for the opportunity as it is something new and a lot to learn from for the museum as well.
– We got a nice amount of application and we selected the groups on diversity and what they bring to the table. The concept creation and the finalizing part will be done before the end of this year and the exhibition starts from February, 2017.
